Tennis plagued by pushy parents

WHY IS it that tennis, more than any other sport, seems to be plagued by the pushy parent/s syndrome?

We had more of it with the recent autobiography of Arantxa Sánchez-Vicario, where the Spaniard – a three-time French Open and one-time US Open champion – claims her parents made her “suffer a lot” and, more than that, she accused them of mishandling her €45 million fortune to the extent she is struggling to pay her debts.

LTAM SPORTEXCEL 14U 2012 LEG 1

Leg 1 of the Sportexcel ended on Tuesday with Koay Hao Sheng emerged as the champion in the Boys category. In the Final, he defeated Talhah Rahizam,  7- 5, 6 – 0. The tournament saw a 64 entries for the Boys. In the semi finals, Talhan Rahizam played a marathon match defeating Muhd Khairil Anas Abdul Rahim, 4-6, 6-4, 6-4. Koay Hao Sheng made short work of Sheikh Ameer Sheikh Ahmad and won convincingly, 6-0, 6-1.

$15,000 Prize money category for women

In 2011 a proposal was submitted to the ITF Women’s Circuit Committee suggesting the introduction of a new $15,000 prize money category for Women. Following a review, with the help of the WTA, of the historic and existing calendar structures, ranking point allocation and players’ earning potential across professional tennis, the Committee recognised the benefits that this new category would offer those players embarking on a career in the game and therefore approved its introduction from 2012.

While the option to apply for and to hold $15,000 Women’s Circuit tournaments is available in 2012, given the planning required to do so and the length of the application period (four month application deadline) the category is unlikely to become established until 2013. However, applications are now welcomed in addition to those for tournaments in the existing $10,000 and $25,000 categories.

Details of the WTA ranking points allocation for the $15,000 category, the prize money distribution and all other relevant rules are clearly marked (underlined) in the 2012 regulations, which can now be downloaded from the ITF Pro Circuit website (click on the link). Relevant changes to the Minimum Standards for the Organisation of ITF Pro Circuit Tournaments document have been made, which is also downloadable from the website, including the minimum officiating requirements. Also updated and available for download on the website are the tournament application form and factsheet templates.

To ensure a smooth introduction, the Committee will closely monitor the impact this new $15,000 category will have on players, Nations and the calendar structure in general as it establishes itself on the Circuit.

Azarenka and Djokovic make history in Melbourne

The first Grand Slam of the season turned out to be a showcase of the health and diversity of European tennis, with the eight singles semi-finalists representing eight different European nations. All eyes were on the ‘Big Four’ of men’s tennis throughout the tournament, with fans eagerly anticipating the latest instalments in the rivalries between the world’s Top 4 players, who have established an almost unbreakable monopoly of Grand Slam semifinal spots over the last year. The four duly held their seedings to meet in the semis, where Rafael Nadal once again got the better of Roger Federer in a fourset match to book his place in a final. Top seed and defending champion Novak Djokovic survived a strong test from Andy Murray in their rematch of the 2011 final. The Serb eventually prevailed 7-5 in the fifth set of a brutal match that highlighted Murray’s early progress under new coach Ivan Lendl and determination to win a first Slam in 2012.
