With an overwhelming response and support shown by the tennis fraternity from all over the country, the sport is definitely alive and vibrant. One thing for sure,this tournament is not for the faint hearted. Those who took part in Leg 2 of the National Circuit are now eager and looking forward to the next leg, which will be held in June. For this leg, the men’s singles prize money has been raised from RM4000 to RM5000. KLLTA will be host of this event.
The rigourous National circuit continues to be exciting, challenging and demanding but the rejuvenated Si Yew Ming, the National number 1 proved age is no barrier to success. A losing finalist, in the first leg, he showed grit and determination and outgunned Abdul Hazli Zainuddin, a former Davis Cupper 6-4,6-4 and pocketed the RM 4,000 prize money.
In the semifinals, Si Yew Ming defeated Ahmed Deedat, 7-6(4), 6-4 while In the other semifinals, Abdul Hazli, showed he still has some steam left overpowered Leg 1 Champion, Ariez Elyaas Deen Heesham,in a three setter, 2-6,6-4,6-1. For Ariez, this is one tournament he wanted to forget. Beginning from the quarter finals, he was streched by Syed Agil before winning 3 -6, 6-3, 7-6(3). However, by the time he met Azli, Ariez was already a spent force. The only Malaysian, with an ATP point, Ariez will now take part in the Vietnam Futures in order to add more points to his rankings and set his mind to win one of the Futures.
In the Men’s doubles final, the number 2 seed, Abdul Hazli and Ahmad Deedat, upset the number 1 seed Syed Agil and Mohd Ashaari, 6-4, 6-3. Both Abdul Hazli and Ahmed Deedat took home RM2, 000 and Syed Agil and Mohd Ashaari won RM1, 000.
Meanwhile, in the Women’s singles, both wild card entries to the last WTA event at Bukit Kiara, Jawairiah Noordin and Kuching born, Choo Lyn Yuen locked horns in the finals. The fitter Choo outlasted Jawairiah, defeating the Pulau Pinang lass, 6-0, 6-1. Choo collected RM1200 and Jawairiah, RM600.
In the women’s doubles, Choo partnering Ti Jia Wei from Pahang defeated the Sarawak and Selangor combination of Aslina Chua and Alyssa Boey, 7-5, 4-6, 10-5.

The just concluded 2nd Penang Asian 14 U Series held at the Penang Sports Club, Jalan Utama, Penang saw another Malaysian, Koay Hao Sheng on the podium acclaimed the champion for the 2012 series. Prior to this, Mohd Assri Merzuki took the singles title in the Brunei ITF Group 4. In the final in Penang, Koay Hao Sheng defeated Chen Hua Yu from Chinese Taipei, 6-3, 6-3. Koay won a double when he partnered Singaporean, Sherwin Foo, defeating a Malaysian pair of Talhah Rahizam and Sheikh Ameer Sheikh Ahmad, 6-0, 6-2. The emergence of Malaysians and the success shown by them in tournaments, is definitely encouraging and spurs other Malaysians to do well.
33 Boys and 19 Girls representing Chinese Taipei, Phillipines, Singapore, Indonesia and Malaysia took part in the one week event:
Meanwhile, in the Girl’s singles Hsuan Cho, from Chinese Taipei defeted Shevita Aulana, from Indonesia 6-0, 6-2 to claim the Singles title.

The ITF has announced the country and individual rankings from the above championships.
Although in the country ranking the regional super powers such as (China and Korea) are above the rest. Malaysia fared well among her South East Asian counterparts leaving behind Indonesia and finishing not so far from the Philippines. Malaysia's was placed 9 out of 14 participating countries.
In the individual boys final positions, Koay Hao Sheng was 20th out of 34 players and Khairil Anas Abd Rahim no. 25.
In the girls final positions, Yus Syazlin Yusri emerged a respectful no. 7 out 33 participants while Nurin Nabilah Roslan was no. 25.
Our players showed that they can deliver when it mattered most (especially Yus Syazlin). They proved that they can challenged some the of the top 14 Under players in the Asian region. This tournament was a good moral booster for our players. All concerned in this development must be continuously commited for a long term effort . We will hear many good news about these players' performance in the future. As they say "If you train hard, you'll not only be hard, you'll be hard to beat".

The ITF 19th Sarawak Chief Minister’s Cup G1 was held from 11th March 2012 - 18th March 2012 in Kuching Sarawak. The Sarawak Lawn Tennis Association as the tournament organiser offered 3 wild cards maindraw to the 18 under boys players and 1 maindraw wild card for the 18 under girl elite player. Although Khoo Er Yang was not under our elite squad, he was given a wild card by the Organiser based on his level of play.. The following players competed in the above tournament.

Prior to Kuching, the players put up a creditable performance in Brunei, where Mohd Assri Merzuki emerged the champion in the singles and runners up in the doubles. Unfortunately, due to divine intervention in Kuching, the match scheduled went haywire. Somehow or rather, the performance of the players also nosedived and in the first round, the boys were all sent packing.

This is a quality tournament, where players from Russia, India, Canada, Azabaijan, Korea, Australia, Indonesia, Uzbekistan, Japan, Kirgistan, Chinese Taipei, Ukraine,Belarus, Philippines,Hong Kong, Czech Republic, Switzerland, Holland, New Zealand, Italy, Britain, Lithuania, USA, Croatia, Serbia and Malaysia, took part.
Although our players did not fared well in this tournament, but the experienced gained is invaluable considering the opponents that they faced.
Ashaari Zainal was the accompanying coach to this tournament, beside, ITF Melaka and Brunei Darussalam.

A total of 14 countries took part in the ITF/ATF 14U Development Championships – Division I in Manila, Philippines.
The participating countries were: China, Chinese Taipei, India, Indonesia, Hong Kong, Kazakhstan, Korea, Malaysia, Philippines, Singapore, Sri Lanka, Thailand, Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan.
This two-week competition was hosted by the Philippine Tennis Association and funded by the ITF Grand Slam Development Fund. The competition consisted of two tournaments.
This yearly event gave many best Asian players a chance to compete against each other.
Four Malaysian players had qualified for the competition from ITF/ATF 14U Development Championships – Division II. They were: Koay Hao Sheng, Khairil Anas Abd Rahim, Yus Syazlin Yusri and Nurin Nabilah Roslan.
The competition consisted of two tournaments and the tournament format was a Compass Draw, which ensures that each player plays the same amount of matches and an exact finishing order can be established for every player.
In the first tournament (6-10 March) the Malaysian players’ final positions were: Koay Hao Sheng 14th out of 34 players, Khairil Anas 25 out of 34, Yus Syazlin 18 out of 33 and Nurin Nabilah 29 out of 33.
In the doubles our players lost in the 1st round.
In the second tournament (12-16 March) all of our players improved their rankings: Koay Hao Sheng was 14/34, Khairil Anas 22/34, Yus Syazlin 4/33. Nurin Nabilah lost her 1st round match and was not able to continue her singles matches.
In the doubles, the boys lost their first round match in three sets, but put a good fight against the no. 2 seeded pair. Both girls played very well and reached the semi finals.
All in all our players gained a lot of good exposure during this two week competition. They were able to gauge their performance against some of the best in Asia. Yus Syazlin clearly showed that she has the standard to match the best girls 14U in Asia.
Summarizing the event, our players commented; “This was a very good chance for us to play
with and against the best players from other Asian countries.”
