April 2012

Junior Davis Cup/Junior Fed Cup

2012 Asia/Oceania Final Qualifying – Bendigo – Australia – 23 – 29 April 2012.

Both the Malaysian  Junior Davis and Fed Cup squad left for Bendigo, Australia with a mission to do well in this Oceania Final Qualifying. The Junior Davis Cup team was represented by Low Kar Win, Colin Wong and Ahmad Faez Shamsuddin. The team was led by Ashaari Zainal Abidin. The Girls team was made up of Aslina Chua, Choo Lyn Yuen and Alyssa Boey. The Non playing Captain was Francis Su.

In New Delhi, in 2011, the Junior Davis Cup team was in 11th place, whilst the girls were in 15th position out of 16 teams. The Girls team had to play in a pre qualifying tournament before they saw action in Bendigo, Australia.

A rejuvenated team this time around, Francis Su and his players took the challenge by proving that an influential coach could do wonders to spur his players. He did just that.

After failing to upstaged China and Australia, with a loss of 0 – 3 in both matches, the Junior Fed Cup team bounced back in style to beat Singapore 2 – 1, Vietnam 2 – 1, Chinese Taipei 3 – 0 and Uzbekistan 2- 0  to qualify for the 9th to 16th place play-off. Malaysia met Uzbekistan for the second time and beat them 2 – 0  and placed 9th. That was a huge and memorable achievements  for Aslina Chua, Choo Lyn Yuen,  Alyssa Boey and to both coaches, Deen Heshaam who trained them and Francis Su who guided the players in Bendigo. The hardest but not an impossible task from now on is to maintain the consistency. With a genuine and honest intention of the Lawn Tennis Association of Malaysia to develop tennis in the country, anything is possible if the players are hungry for success and believed  in themselves. Congratulations to the Junior Fed Cup team for a successful campaign this year.

The Junior Davis Cup team represented by Low Kar Win, Colin Wong and Ahmad Faez Shamsuddin and managed  by Ashaari Zainal Abidin were not as enterprising as their counterpart. In their first match, they lost to India, 0 -3 followed by another loss to China, 0 -2. Malaysia managed to salvaged some pride by beating  our neighbour, Singapore, 2 – 1 than succumbed to the Philippines 0 – 3 and Uzbekistan 1 – 2. With that results, Malaysia was placed 12th out of 16 teams.

The four Junior Davis Cup teams that will see action in the finals from the Asia/Oceania Zone in Barcelona this year, will be Korea, Australia, China and Japan, whilst the Fed Cup teams to Spain will comprise of Australia, Japan, China and Korea.

Sportexcel 14U 2012 Leg 2, 13 – 17 April, 2012

Anatomy of the Boys Singles final between Talhah Rahizam and Mohd Khairil Anas Abd Rahim.

Long term tennis rivals and tennis friends, Mohd Khairil Anas and Talhah Rahizam battled it out again in the Boys final, Leg 2 of Sportexcel 14U 2012. Khairil Anas won 3-6, 6-1, 6-2.

Definitions:

Winner is shot, in which the players earned the point by hitting an outright winner (opponent made no contact with the racket). Typical such a shot is an ace.

Winner is also a shot where player forces an error (forced error). Examples: Player hits hard and/or is close to his opponent thus creating time pressure. Player makes opponent run at high speed. Player plays difficult heights (very high, very low) and/or spins etc.

Unforced error is a shot in which the player hit the ball too hard and/or too close to the net or lines thus using too small safety margin. Player tried a shot which didn’t yet belong to his/her repertoire. Player had a concentration lapse.

Deciding what is a winner or an unforced error, is a subjective decision and therefore never absolutely accurate.

Analysis

Serve:

Both players had a high enough 1st percentage. High 1st serve % is tactically an important point as players due to their physical strength can seldom serve aces (Talhah had one winner). Number of double faults was not too high.

Winners to errors ratio:

Here Anas was clearly better. His ratio was 1:1.02, which is a high one for a junior player. Talhah’s 1:2.6 is not bad, but on that day it was not enough. Both players have still work to do. Djokovic’s ratio was 1:0.37 during 2010 season.

Right approach for most junior players is to play consistently (that is what the top players are doing) avoiding and reducing unforced errors. In other words using shots which they master, using good (big) safety margins and focusing on the ball while it is being played.

Net game:

In this match Anas was pretty impressive at the net hitting 17 winners versus 7 errors.

Summary

The match which the boys played on April 17, is naturally just one match and one cannot draw far reaching conclusions based on one match only. There has to be more analysis in the future to find tendencies, which then are taken into consideration when planning the players’ training program.

Sportexcel 14U 2012 Leg 2, 13 – 17 April, 2012.

In the absence of Koay Hao Sheng and Yussazlin Nabila Yusri both from Perlis,  due to injuries this second leg of the Sportexcel, from 13 – 17 April, 2012, held at the Kompleks Tenis Tun Razak, Jalan Duta, Kuala Lumpur saw a new Champion in both the boys and girls event.

Without Koay Hao Sheng, the number 1 seed in the Boy’ Singles, went to Talhah Rahizam and the number 2 seed to Mohd Khairil Anas Rahim. Both are from Sekolah Sukan Bukit Jalil under the tutelage of Taisto Sinkonnen. True to form, both met in the finals. Khairil who fell to Talhah on many occasions, proved he has learnt his lessons well and this time around, managed to upstaged Talhah, in three sets, 36, 61 62. This tournament more or less is a warm up for both players in preparations for their trip to Kuching for the World Junior Tennis Championships at the end of this month. In the semi finals, Khairil defeated Sheikh Ameer, 64, 63 whilst Talhah defeated Muhd Saiful Azry, 64, 60.

In Tier 2 of the boys singles finals, Adam Syafiq from Perlis beat Lee Huang Yee of Pulau Pinang, 60, 61.

Talhah Rahizam made amends in the boys doubles by capturing the boys doubles title partnering Saiful Azry to outclass Danial Ahmad Farid and Muhd Khairil Anas 64, 63.

In Tier 2, Boys Doubles, Lee Huang Yi who partnered Brian Lee, both from Pulau Pinang emerged the winner defeating Shafiee Jalil and Wan Mohamad Fakrul, 61, 63.

Meanwhile in the girls singles semi finals,  Loo Shi Pei from Pulau Pinang upset the number 1 seed, Nurin Nabilah Roslan of Kuala Lumpur, 62, 62 to reach the finals. Iranian, Tara Afzalira who beat Aida Hereena Hairy Anuar from Perlis 76(1), 63 found her match in the finals against Loo Shi Pei, a tough nut to crack before loosing to the Pulau Pinang lass  60, 61.

In Tier 2, girls singles, Siti Norarfah Mohd Azli from Terengganu made her presence felt by being champion in that category defeating Haarini Balakrishnan of Selangor, 60, 61.

In the Girls Doubles, Nurin Nabila unable to win the singles crown partnered Suhana Sofea from Selangor made short work of Samantha Jane and Tara Afzalirad, 61, 63.

In  the Girls Doubles Tier 2, the Wan sisters of Elsa and Elysia took the title on a walkover, over Aina Yasmin and Miza Izzati.

As a whole, the tournament saw a tremendous support where in the boy’s category  82 participated and for the girls, 32 took part. This indicates the popularity of the sport in the country and with more young players taking up the sport we shall see some ‘stars’ for the future in this sportexcel series. The involvement and support of parents who came from all over the country with their families watching their siblings, either boys or girls play at the Tennis Centre, was refreshing and encouraging.

The next leg of the Sportexcel will be held next month, from 25 to 29 May, 2012.
