Juniors crash

KUCHING: It was another day of upsets as the top seeds were sent packing from the boys and girls singles and doubles competitions at the 7th Asian 14 and Under Series Tennis Championship.

Malaysia’s sole survivor in the boys singles semi-fi nals Tony Chin was shown the exit by qualifi er Jack Wong of Hong Kong who won 7-5, 7-5.

Wong’s fi nal opponent today is top seed and ATF No 1 player Kareem Allaf of Syria who swept ATF No 33 Jeff Chan of Hong Kong 6-1, 6-1.

Malaysia’s Kaur Delizavernn, the top seed in the girls singles main draw, also suffered a similar fate as Chin when she fell 2-6, 2-6 to unseeded Chien Pei Ju of Taiwan in the semifi nals yesterday.

Uzbek lass Saidhujaeva, seeded eighth, was also on fi re when she upstaged seventh seed Rifanty Dwi Khafi any of Indonesia 6-2, 6-2 in another semi-final.

Meanwhile, another unseeded pair from Hong Kong Lawrence Lo and Jack Wong clinched the boys doubles crown after they overcame Uzbekistan’s Sanetulla Kutibaev and Khumuyunhon Sultanov in three sets.

The Hong Kong boys were 5- 7 down in the fi rst set but came back strongly to level the score 6-4 in the second set and took the decider 10-7.

En route to the final, Lo-Wong blanked Kareem Allaf (Syria) and Eric Oliverez Jr (Philippines) 6-0, 6-0 in the first round.

They went on to upset third seeds Joel William Ivander Suhendi-Akbar Thio Pangestu of Indonesia 6-1 and 6-2 in the last eight.

Lo-Wong created a bigger upset when they showed second seeds Tony Chin-Talhah Mohamad Rahizam of Malaysia the exit 6-0, 6-4 in the semifi nals.

The battle for supremacy in the girls doubles was between two unseeded pairs, Sarvinozhon Saidhujaeva and Guzal Yusupova of Uzbekistan and Pao Yi Chen-Chien Pei Ju of Taiwan.

Pao-Chien, who upstaged tournament second seeds Kaur Delizavernn (Malaysia) and Meredith Jones (Philippines), met a stiffer opposition in the final.

They took the fi rst set 6-4 but lost the second set 3-6. In the decider, they won 10-5 to lift the title. - Borneo Post Online
