The 5th Malacca ITF U18 Junior Championship 2012 was held from the 27th February to 2nd March recently at the MITC tennis complex in Ayer Keroh, Melaka. The response was overwhelming. The Acceptance List for both the boys and girls was full in the Main Draw, Qualification with many more players waiting in the Alternate List. What amazed me even more is that the players in the Qualification were all ITF ranked players!
This year the tournament attracted players from more than 20 countries. From the Asian region, we have players from Thailand, Singapore, Indonesia, Philippines, Vietnam, Myanmar, China, Korea, Japan, Taiwan, Hong Kong, India, Sri Lanka and Bangladesh. We even have players from New Zealand and Australia. Further away, the tournament attracted players from USA, Poland, Russia, Uzbekistan, Turkmenistan, Ireland, England, Holland, Canada, Serbia, Ecuador, Finland, Kazakhstan and Germany.
The tournament in Malacca has grown in popularity and the ITF players have made the Malacca ITF Grade 4 tournament a stopover before they proceed to other ITF tournaments in Brunei, Thailand and Sarawak.
This year an unseeded player from Hong Kong, Wong Chun Hun emerged champion in the Boys’ Singles event beating the seeded 6 Russian, Stanislav Korshunov 3-6, 6-3, 6-1. In the Girls’ Singles event, Hsu Ching-Wen lived up to her No. 1 seeding to win the championship beating Snehadevi Reddy of India 6-4, 6-2. Malaysian players have their share of titles in the Boys’ Doubles. Ahmad Deedat teamed up with Korean
Lee Duck Hee to be champion beating Mohd Assri Merzuki who partnered Carter Lin of USA. Snehadevi Reddy made up her loss in the singles event to win the Girls’ doubles with Venugopal Tatachar. The girls from India got their revenge against the singles champion Hsu Ching-Wen who partnered Arina Folts of Uzbekistan winning the match 6-2,6-4.
